This new turnkey solution enables sugar mills to source a complete electro-mechanical drive package from BMG, simplifying the modernisation of ageing drive systems, while improving long-term reliability and maintainability.

BMG is participating at the 98th South African Sugar Technologists’ Association (SASTA) conference, which is taking place at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, from 18 to 20 August 2026.

“This major event highlights sugarcane innovation, sustainability and industrial product diversification and is an important opportunity for BMG to showcase the company’s capability to provide and support total process solutions to many industries, including the sugar sector,” says Rudzani Ramuageli, Head of Projects, BMG. “The company – which celebrates over 52 years of business – boasts a broad range of engineering components and capital equipment, enhanced by a high level of supporting technical expertise and close client collaboration.

“BMG is strengthening its support for the sugar industry by expanding its power-transmission portfolio to include an integrated turnkey drive solution designed to simplify the upgrading of ageing drive systems for main crushing mills, while ensuring long-term reliability and maintainability.

“This engineered system combines a Danfoss variable-speed drive, BMG electric motor, high-speed coupling, Dinamic Oil planetary gearbox and multi-misalignment rope coupling. Together, these components provide controlled, high-torque power transmission for demanding sugar mill applications.

“A key feature of BMG’s mill drive solution is the multi-misalignment rope coupling, which connects the planetary gearbox to the mill’s top roller. The coupling accommodates lateral, axial and angular misalignment, together with movement of the top roller. It also absorbs operational shock loads, helping to protect critical components within the drive system.

“The ability to accommodate movement and misalignment is particularly important in arduous operating conditions in sugar milling, where dependable power transmission is essential to maintaining production.

“BMG’s integrated solution has also been developed to keep abreast with the modernisation of existing mills. For retrofit projects, the drive components can be mounted and aligned on a purpose-designed sole plate, engineered to suit the mill’s existing layout and foundation interfaces. This approach can reduce the extent of civil modifications required and consequently helps to minimise installation time and production downtime.”

BMG supports its new drive package with site assessment, engineering, assembly, installation supervision and commissioning. By incorporating the principal drive components and associated engineering support together within a single package, sugar mills are able to source a complete electro-mechanical drive solution from one supplier.

The BMG team works closely with key players in the sugar industry – from cane growers to the sugar refinery – to enhance production efficiencies, minimise downtime and extend the service life of critical systems in the field and during harvesting, transport, milling and refining.
