South Africa’s Food Lovers Market and partners are delighted to announce that they have collected a record number of 2,515,203 meals during the May Hunger Month campaign. On Tuesday, 14 June 2022, Andrew Millson, (Food Lover’s Market Head of HR and Sustainability), and Roelf Pienaar, (Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing Managing Director), handed over a cheque for the meals to Andy du Plessis, Managing Director of FoodForward SA – which amounts to R 1 710 338,04.

Over the last six years, Food Lovers Market and partners have done extensive fund-raising during the month of May, culminating with World Hunger Day on 28 May. The beneficiary for the funds are FoodForward SA, whose main focus is reducing hunger in South Africa by safely and cost-effectively securing quality food for those who need it.

With 30 million food-insecure South Africans, its easy to understand that hunger and food insecurity is a very serious issue in South Africa. This year, Food Lovers Market approached key partners – such as Tru-Cape – to contribute financially at the onset of the campaign.

Shoppers then had the opportunity to voluntarily buy a meal for a fellow South African at a Food Lovers Market till point during the month of May – each meal costing a mere 68 cents. On World Hunger Day, 28 May 2022, Food Lovers Market also matched any meal bought by a shopper.

The 2,5million meals collected comprises of 1, 948 011 donated by Food Lovers Market and its fresh and grocery partners, and 567,192 meals donated by shoppers at Food Lover’s Market till-points nationwide.

Food Lovers Market thanks its partners and the public for supporting this important campaign to address hunger and malnutrition.
