The Mount Kenya University (MKU) has unveiled a centre of excellence for agriculture for Animal Health, Agriculture and Education science at their Nakuru campus.
The varsity’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi said the move aims to boost country’s food security through equipping students with skills to lead the country’s agriculture sector in future.
Centre of excellence status
The campus is the latest to acquire centre of excellence status after the Thika main campus that excels in medical and human health, the Nairobi campus in business and graduate studies, the Parklands Law campus in legal training, while the Mombasa campus deals with maritime studies and the blue economy. The campus features training and research equipment to support training in agriculture, animal health and production and education science programme.
“The university Senate has also approved Master of Science in Crop Protection and Photo-Sanitary Science, and the Diploma in Animal Health and Production (upgrading). Also approved is a revised curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Animal Health. The university has also acquired multi-million shillings’ worth of state-of-the-art research equipment that has positioned the institution as one of the best and most well-equipped academic and research institutions in East Africa. We are are working on a framework to have members of the public interact with their equipment,” Prof. Jaganyi said.
