Hungary has announced its support to Ghana’s poultry sector through the largest transaction between the two nations.

Ambassador of Hungary to Ghana noted that it is part of a anticipated long-term partnership. About 6 million chicken layers are supplied from Hungarian agricultural companies each year and noted this shipment as one that will open new doors for greater partnerships and support for agricultural developments in the African nation.

Economic development

This progress between the 2 nations also signals a good relationship between private and public sector, reports Africa Business, as the move targets collaborations with the Hungarian National Agriculture Research and Innovation Centre, Hungarian Bobolna Tetra Limited, and local entities including the Ghanaian Poultry Association and Akate Farms. The embassy has also exhibited a strong desire in sharing knowledge and aiding in providing solutions for local agricultural challenges in Ghana.

Earlier this year, the Ghana Chicken Festival was held in Accra to provide a platform for poultry players to interact and advocate for more consumption of locally-produced chicken. According to the festival’s coordinator, Asiwome Biekro, about 95% of chicken consumed in Ghana is imported, adding that the chicken sector was one of the key industries that could spur Ghana’s economic development, noting that many jobs would be created if the local sector took a 25% market share.

Meanwhile, Hungary’s minister of agriculture, István Nagy, also recently held talks with Egypt’s agriculture and land reclamation minister, El Sayyed el Qusair, regarding fostering relations in the fields of poultry, livestock and fish production as well as veterinary vaccines and vegetable seeds.
