The government of Rwanda has partnered with Volkswagen, a German motor vehicle manufacturer to introduce locally assembled electric tractors to enable its farmers boost production and reducing carbon emissions for environmental protection purposes.
In a memorandum of understanding signed with Volkswagen on June 9 to implement the GenFarm Project, Rwanda’s the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), termed the move as one which will help increase agricultural mechanization and modernize the sector.
GenFarm is regarded as a sustainable Co2-free hub where farmers can reserve an e-tractor with a trained driver.
The country’s decision to utilize locally assembled Volkswagen electric tractors marks a notable advancement in the country’s agricultural practices.
“These electric tractors offer numerous benefits, including reduced carbon emissions, improved energy efficiency, and lower operational costs. By embracing this technology, Rwanda aims to enhance agricultural sustainability while minimizing the sector’s environmental footprint,” said Ildephonse Musafiri, Rwanda’s Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources.
He signed the MOU representing Rwanda’s government while Martina Biene, Chairperson and Managing Director of Volkswagen South Africa represented Volkswagen.
President Paul Kagame on June 9 received Volkswagen Group Executives delegation which is in Rwanda for the 5th anniversary of Volkswagen partnership with Rwanda.
“The project will provide farmers with access to VW electric tractors as part of an effort to establish a holistic ecosystem of e-powered mechanised farming services,” Presidency stated.
According to MINAGRI’s Annual report 2021-2022, the fourth strategic plan for agriculture transformation (PSTA-4), from 2018 through 2024, emphasises the promotion and dissemination of adapted mechanised technologies to boost farm yield and production by minimising the harvest and post-harvest losses, while saving human and capital investment in farm operations.
Green initiatives
The introduction of electric tractors is a strategic move that aligns with Rwanda’s commitment to green initiatives and the Paris Agreement’s climate objectives.
These tractors leverage clean energy sources, such as solar power, to operate efficiently, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution associated with traditional diesel-powered machinery.
Furthermore, the use of electric tractors promotes a quieter and healthier working environment for farmers.
“The local assembly of Volkswagen electric tractors in Rwanda presents a significant opportunity for technological innovation and economic growth. By partnering with Volkswagen, Rwanda is fostering a conducive environment for the development of a robust automotive industry within the country. This collaboration not only strengthens the local manufacturing sector but also creates employment opportunities and enhances skills development,” said Biene.
Additionally, the adoption of electric tractors aligns with Rwanda’s broader agenda of promoting the use of electric vehicles and renewable energy.
It showcases the nation’s determination to become a hub for sustainable technologies and a pioneer in the African green economy. Through this initiative, Rwanda aims to inspire other nations to embrace similar advancements in agriculture and sustainable practices.
