This year, Heritage Day will mark a local (maybe even international) food record with ProVeg South Africa hosting their annual Plant-Based Heritage Day Braai for the first time in two years.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, plant-based events, like all events, were suddenly snubbed. But ProVeg South Africa, the local branch of the global food awareness organisation ProVeg International, aims to restart that spark with a braai event like no other.

“The braai is such a central part of the South African culture and a space for all South Africans to come together and celebrate our rich heritage,” Donovan Will, ProVeg South Africa Country Director, said.

“This event also allows us to prove to non-vegans that a braai can be just as delicious if it’s plant-based. This way it is also better for the environment and animals.”

On the menu is a selection of several plant-based meat alternatives such as Beyond Meat’s breakfast sausage patties, Urban Vegan’s Prime Patties, Fry’s Big Fry Burger, and many more. There will also be several gluten-free options available.

A wide selection of salads and sides, as well as drinks, will accompany these delicious plant-based burgers and boerie rolls.

Parents will be delighted to know that children under the age of 10 will get free access (when opting for the Children under 10 ticket on Quicket) and there will be free children’s entertainment on the day.

There will also be enough space for informal ball sports like touch rugby and soccer.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own camping chairs, picnic blankets, umbrellas, sunscreen and hats to enjoy a lazy Saturday in the sun with friends, family, and good food.

Event partners include:

B-well, BuchuLife, Greenhome, Happy Earth People, Imambosi, Infinite Foods (Beyond Meat and JUST Egg), Kauai, Fry’s Family Food Co., Oumph!, Marie Sharps, Meatless Farm, OKJA, Outcast Foods, Pesto Princess, Romeo and Vero, Red Espresso, SOMA, Shop Zero, Switch Energy Drinks, Urban Vegan, Veggie Wors, Wellness Warehouse, and Nourish’d.
