The government of Morocco has announced a raise in the minimum wage for both industrial and agricultural workers.

The country’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch revealed the report and said the government raised the minimum wage for agriculture workers by 10%, and for industry workers by 5%. While underscoring the significant strides the government has made in improving working conditions in Morocco, Akhannouch recalled that the minimum conditions to benefit from a pension are currently 1,320 days, down from 3,240 days.

Social welfare state

Noting the government’s efforts to bring Morocco closer to becoming a social welfare state, Akhannouch said that the government ratified today 12 decrees that aim to “enhance the quality of the national social dialogue and render it more effective.” Of the 12 decrees, seven pertain to raising child benefits and raising the minimum wage in the public sector to MAD 3,500 ($331).

The government has equally illuminated the lowest salary echelon for public sector employees and boosted the annual quota for workers that could access promotions to 36%. Presenting the results of the country’s ongoing social dialogue, the head of government noted that after conferring with major labor unions in the health sector, the government has introduced a number of reforms to the sector aiming to increase the sector’s efficiency and improve working conditions for health workers.

The government has introduced 15 legal amendments aiming to improve working conditions for health workers, as well as workers within the pharmaceutical industry as a whole, Akhannounch pointed out. The amendment will become effective on January 1, 2023.
