MEC Desbo Mohono will lead this year’s Provincial Grain Harvest day in Springbokpan village in the NgakaModiri Molema District.
The event themed: “Ensuring sustainable food security and agricultural economic growth through intensified sustainable grain production’’, comes post the commitment by the NWDARD to put 20 000 hectares of fallow land in communal land into production and as part of the Departmental Crop Massification program, to address the challenges faced by the food insecure population to gain access to production resources.
The event will be held on a plot that young farmer, Mr Seitshiro Maruoloe leases from the tribal authority on which he produces maize and beans.
The Crop Massification program aims to increase the number of hectares under production to enhance availability, affordability, access to food and achieve the distribution of crop production inputs and mechanization packages. Currently, the North West Province is the third largest producer of maize, second in sunflower production and the largest producer of ground nuts in South Africa.
The day will be graced by farmers from all four districts, officials from Agriculture Research Council, Noord-Wes Koporasie, South African Grain Farmers Association, Grain SA and Pannar.
