Zimbabwe has setup its first cannabis processing and export plant in Msasa, Harare for medicinal purposes.
The plant is being constructed by King Kong Organics (KKOG) and it is a subsidiary of KKOG Global.
Since 2018, the Zimbabwe government has issued licenses to 57 companies.
KKOG has also established a 1 000 hectare cannabis plant in Zimbabwe.
Speaking at a ceremony to launch the plant, Ministry of Industry and Commerce Mavis Sibanda, said the KKOG plant would provide an opportunity for scientists and researchers to learn and develop new medicines.
“The next step on our Zimbabwe development roadmap would be the implementation of our first medicinal Green Zone in Victoria Falls. Tourism as we know brings US$50 million a year into the national economy,” she said.
KKOG chief executive Rene Joseph added that cannabis medicinal products would create synergies and be of great benefit to Zimbabwe.
“KKOG believes that Africa has the ability to control the cannabis industry as a whole and with the right groups and partnerships, it would have a large portion of the market share, if not all,” he said.
KKOG has regional presence in Rwanda, Malawi, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa.
It also operates the only cannabis extraction facility in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
