The government of Sudan has affirmed to have received the third shipment of wheat aid from the United States. The country received 48,000 tonnes of wheat aid.
It had previously said the United States will supply Sudan with 300,000 tonnes of wheat this year, rising to 420,000 tonnes annually from 2022-2024, after Sudan was removed from its state sponsors of terrorism list. The African country received two U.S. wheat shipments, each of 48,000 tonnes, in June and July.
Humanitarian crisis
Three other shipments are expected before the end of the year. Officials said the U.S. wheat was in addition to 400,000 tonnes harvested locally and a further 300,000 tonnes expected from Sudan. South Sudan is facing one of the worst food security and nutrition crises globally, as an estimated 7.2 million people, representing 60% of the country’s population, are expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3+) between now and the peak of the next lean season.
The country is in the midst of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis driven by over four years of brutal civil war. Half of the population are facing extreme hunger and are in need of urgent aid. Help us provide food, water and sanitation now. However, the cabinet acknowledged they have sufficient strategic stocks of wheat and flour to last until April 2022
The conflict has pushed the country into an economic free-fall with food and fuel prices skyrocketing and an ever-rising cost of living. Trade and local markets have been disrupted and food stock has depleted.
