Village Business Units are taking centre stage in Zimbabwe’s rural development agenda. The energy was evident at a colourful Garden Day held recently at Nyabvedzi Village Business Unit, Ward 6, Rushinga District, Zimbabwe.
Nyabvedzi VBU demonstrates how coordinated action between government, agricultural advisory officers, and the local community can drive sustainable agricultural productivity and enterprise development. Through aligned technical support, policy backing, and active community participation, the unit has become a practical example of the Village Business Unit model in action.
Established on 20 September 2025 as a relief initiative, the VBU was created to strengthen food security and ensure agricultural sustainability in rural communities.
Testimonies from the garden chairperson, secretary, and community members indicate that the VBU is progressing well and moving in the right direction. The event was graced by officials from various government institutions.
Hon. Thompson, the guest of honour, emphasized youth engagement and empowerment as key drivers of community development. She urged farmers to implement projects according to guidance from advisory officers to achieve meaningful development. She concluded by appreciating the collaborative efforts between advisory officers and beneficiaries.
Also present was the Provincial Agricultural Officer, who highlighted the importance of Village Business Units and community participation in line with the government’s Vision 2030. He discussed marketing and market research as critical components of any business. “Farmers should focus on high-value agricultural crops to access niche markets, earn higher returns, and achieve faster growth,” he said.
In his closing remarks, he urged line ministries to give full support to Village Business Units and reinforced the need for conservation agriculture to build resilience against the ever-changing climate and recurrent droughts affecting the region.
Despite these gains, the business unit is currently facing water constraints that are affecting productivity.
