Kabonyo-Kanyagwal fish project in Kenya set for take off

The Kabonyo Kanyagwal fisheries and aquaculture research centre project in Kenya is set for commence. This follows the approval of US $2.5billion for the project development by the cabinet.

Mining and blue economy CS Salim Mvurya confirmed the report and said the money will be disbursed in two phases. The first phase will have Sh 1billion while the second phase will have Sh 1.5billion.

The Kabonyo-Kanyagwal fish facility project is being funded by the Republic of Hungary and the government of Kenya and implemented jointly with Tom Mboya University (TMU). The groundbreaking of the fish center will be done in February next year by President William Ruto.

The fish facility will facilitate training, research, innovation and best practices in fisheries and aquaculture through demonstrations and incubations. Other components of the project, he said include a Nile Perch multiplication centre, aquaculture resource centre and the Kenya Fishing School.

The research center will produce 7 million fingerlings annually and this will boost food and nutritional security. At the same time to further cushion farmers from post-harvest losses, the government has embarked on a major construction of fish landing sites across along the lake region to promote value addition. Roads leading to the project site, are also set to be upgraded to bitumen standard further opening up the vast ward for development.

Mvurya also said the government is currently in the final process of finalizing a draft policy paper on the blue economy strategic paper that will ensure effective management of the ocean and lake resources in an equitable and sustainable manner.
