Egypt sends first onion shipment to Pakistan

Egypt has sent the first onion shipment to Pakistan. Agriculture and Land Reclamation Minister El Sayed el Quseir confirmed the report which he said he received from head of the Central Administration of Agricultural Quarantine Ahmed el Attar after negotiations had been rendered a success between both countries following meeting all necessary conditions required by Pakistan.

Egypt’s major agricultural exports to the world are potatoes, cotton, and fresh fruit, primarily citrus.  Most of Egypt’s exports are destined for the EU, Russia, North Africa and the Middle East.  The country’s agricultural exports exceeded 4.6 million tons this year as of January, 2022 and until now. This is an increase of some 40,000 tons compared with the same period last year.

Food security

Egypt takes a broad view of food security, recognizing that with limited arable land and water resources, it will never be self-sufficient in grains, vegetable oil, and animal proteins – 40 percent of Egypt’s imports are food and agricultural products.

The minister extended thanks to Egyptian farmers and exporters for their great efforts, lauding valuable contributions of officials in charge of the quarantine department and the Agriculture Export Council and commercial representation offices that helped increase agricultural exports.
