Egypt release 183,000 tons of fodder

Egypt has released 183,000 tons of fodder including maize and soya beans worth around dlrs 94 million.

The country’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation al-Sayyed al-Quseir confirmed the report and said the move is part of implementation of directives of the political leadership and following Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli’s orders to support the poultry industry.

The released fodder comprised 122,000 tons of maize worth dlrs 44.9 million and 61,000 tons of soya beans worth dlrs 42.8 million, plus other supplements worth about dlrs 8 million. This release was coordinated by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE).

The minister urged importers, whose consignments have been released, to provide the necessary amounts to breeders with affordable prices, noting that he is following up with the CBE and the Egyptian Poultry Association to guarantee periodical release of fodder from the Egyptian harbors.

The poultry production sector in Egypt has witnessed dramatic development due to economic trends and policy shifts occurring during the last two decades. In value terms, 26% of Egypt’s total livestock products came from poultry meat and egg production.

The poultry production sector in Egypt is one of the most feasible sources of animal protein. The poultry industry is relatively more efficient than red meat in providing a cheap protein source to fulfill Egyptian population requirements. Investment in this industry has risen to high levels in the last two decades.

Economic policies adopted in the last two decades have to a large extent encouraged expansion of investment in poultry industry. This trend was the result of increased credit facilities, credit subsidies, input price subsidies (mainly yellow corn, baby chicks, exchange rate), and the provision of other incentives such as tax breaks to the private sector to expand poultry production further.
