Chimhanda District Show Highlights Role of Traditional Grains in Food Security

CHIMHANDA, ZIMBABWE – The annual Chimhanda District Show is currently underway at Chimhanda Secondary School, drawing wide participation from across the district.

Running under the theme “Rooted in Traditional Grains”, the show underscores the district’s strength in small grains production and how it aligns with local rainfall patterns.

Wide Participation and Exhibitions

The event has attracted farmers, schools, seed companies, NGOs, the Division of Veterinary Services, Agricultural Business Advisory Officers, community members, and local businesses. Exhibits include horticultural crops, field crops, forage legumes, livestock, arts, and local crafts.

All wards in the district are represented, with each ward showcasing field crops, horticultural produce, and livestock aimed at promoting agricultural growth and development.

The show officially opened yesterday morning and will run until Sunday, 12 July 2026. Hundreds of people from surrounding areas are expected to attend.

Government Emphasis on Small Grains and Women in Agriculture

The presence of Hon. T. Nyabani highlighted government support for small grains production and its contribution to food security at both district and national level.

Guest of Honour, Hon. T. Gezi, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, described women as key drivers of sustainable agriculture and economic development in Zimbabwe.

Calls for Risk Management and Collaboration

Mr. I. Nzanga, District Agricultural Officer, urged farmers to take up insurance to mitigate risks such as drought, veld fires, hail, and livestock diseases.

Mr. Nziradzebare, District Coordinator for the event, said:
“The show provides an important platform for the community to exchange ideas, market products, and celebrate local development.”The Chimhanda District Show continues to play a vital role in promoting agriculture and business in the district.
