Somalia has received modern equipment from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) to strengthen the operations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, in a move aimed at improving service delivery and supporting the country’s drive toward food self-sufficiency.

According to Somalia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the equipment was officially handed over to Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdi Hayir during a ceremony in Mogadishu and is expected to enhance institutional efficiency, modernise administrative processes, and support the implementation of agricultural development programmes across the country.

In a statement posted on the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation’s X account, Hayir said the support would help strengthen and modernise the ministry’s operations.

“This support will enhance institutional efficiency, accelerate service delivery and contribute to the implementation of agricultural development programs and Somalia’s goal of achieving food self-sufficiency,” the minister said, while thanking the Government of Türkiye and TİKA for their continued support.

The donated package includes electronic office equipment such as computers, printers and television screens, which will be installed in the ministry’s facilities to improve daily operations and administrative capacity.

Officials said the equipment is expected to help streamline management systems and improve the delivery of services to farmers and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

Hayir noted that the assistance followed discussions held with TİKA President Abdullah Eren during a visit to Ankara in 2025, where Somalia sought support for strengthening the ministry’s institutional capacity.

The latest donation adds to a series of agricultural development initiatives supported by Türkiye in Somalia. Over the years, TİKA has implemented projects ranging from greenhouse construction and modern poultry farming to livestock support programmes, all aimed at boosting local food production and strengthening agricultural resilience.

Türkiye has emerged as one of Somalia’s key development partners since 2011, supporting projects in agriculture, education, health, infrastructure and municipal services.

According to TİKA, the agency has carried out more than 500 development projects in Somalia, focusing on sustainable growth and long-term economic development.

Somali officials expressed optimism that the new equipment will improve the ministry’s capacity to deliver agricultural services more efficiently and advance national efforts to increase food production and reduce reliance on imports.
