Egypt ranks 1st in global mullet fish production, 3rd with tilapia

Egypt has been ranked first in the production of mullet fish and third with tilapia globally. The Head of Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research (CLAR) Refaat al-Gamal made the announcement and said the country has also ranked sixth in the world in fish production in general, and is the foremost Arab and African country in fish production.

The country has great experience and successful experiences in the field of livestock and fisheries. Gamal pointed out that Egypt produces two million tons of fish, with 1.6 million tons from fish farms, and 100,000 from the Mediterranean Sea. The rest comes from the lakes and fish projects carried out by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, equivalent to what was accomplished over the past 30 years.

Self-sufficiency in fish production

In his speech, he added that tilapia is one of the best types of fish, rich in omega-3 and amino acids that help in digestion and brain development for children. Egyptian Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation al-Sayed al-Quseir said in November that Egypt has reached self-sufficiency in fish production.

Quseir added that there are major fish projects that have recently been opened, such as al-Fayrouz, al-Diba and Berket Ghalioun project for fish farming and further added that Egypt produces more than 2.2 million tons of fish with a great deal of self-sufficiency, and now exports its fish wealth.

“it is possible to benefit from the Egyptian experiences in the fields of fish farming in the sea and freshwater, whether in the closed cages system or the basin system, as well as an opportunity for cooperation in the field of the fishing fleet and boats, as well as fish diseases, as Egypt has come a long way in this technical field of expertise,” said Quseir.
