For all the in-roads that agriculture in South Africa has made to be more representative, it is still seen as a largely male-dominated industry. That is soon about to change when Lutje Roux enters into the workforce. The former Overberg High School learner achieved the highest mark in the Western Cape for her Agricultural Science examination last year.
Roux lives on Goedemoed in Villiersdorp from where their family business, Willem Thonie Boerdery operates. “We supply our apples and pears to Two-a-Day”, she says adding: “Our family have been growers in Villiersdorp for the last 150 years. I am currently studying Bsc Agricultural Economics Analysis and Management at Stellenbosch University and I am planning on joining my father on the farm after I graduate. I am also interested in the education of economics and agriculture.”
Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing is the largest exporter of South African apples and pears. Managing director Roelf Pienaar says that news of Lutje Roux’s great achievement is especially gratifying. “We wish her a hearty congratulations on the outstanding result and all the best for her bright future in agriculture.” he ends.
