The Government of Rwanda has secured €65 million (about Frw 109.7 billion) from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to strengthen climate resilience, protect biodiversity and improve livelihoods in the country’s north-western region.
The financing agreement was signed by Rwanda’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MINECOFIN) and the European Investment Bank to support the implementation of the Volcanoes Community Resilience Project (VCRP), a flagship initiative focused on helping vulnerable communities adapt to climate-related risks.
The project will be implemented in Gakenke, Burera, Musanze, Nyabihu, Rubavu, Rutsiro, Ngororero and Muhanga districts, benefiting more than 2.3 million people living in areas exposed to floods, landslides and soil erosion.
The investment will finance flood-risk reduction infrastructure, watershed restoration and landscape rehabilitation, while also supporting biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
The VCRP is coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and implemented in partnership with the Rwanda Water Resources Board, Rwanda Meteorology Agency, Rwanda Environment Management Authority and Rwanda Development Board.
The agreement further strengthens cooperation between Rwanda and the European Investment Bank on climate action, environmental protection and resilient infrastructure, while supporting the country’s broader long-term development goals.
