World Environment Day (WED) is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June.
Zoleka Lisa, VP Corporate Affairs says, “As we commemorate World Environment Day, we are cognisant that our actions today will shape the world of tomorrow. WED is a reminder that we all have a role to play in preserving our planet. By taking action we can create a positive ripple effect that extends far beyond this single day.” As a company, SAB recognises its responsibility to protect the environment and actively engages in activities and initiatives that promote sustainability and conservation.
Championing Sustainability
Lisa adds, “Our sustainability agenda is designed to enable our commercial vision and fulfill our company purpose. Our thriving value chain is deeply rooted in local communities and natural ecosystems; and we understand that our success as a company is intricately linked to the well-being and prosperity of the communities where we operate.” The company believes in driving shared values for local communities and the planet and does so through areas such as water stewardship, renewable energy, and entrepreneurship.
Saving the environment one project at a time
Demonstrating SAB’s ongoing commitment can be seen in its efforts to roll out various programmes that serve the environment.
As a responsible water user “We have partnered with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF-SA) to combat invasive alien species in strategic water source areas in George. The project aims to reduce the number of alien species that are water intensive and uses 20% to 60% more water than native vegetation, thus impacting local water security and – leaving communities and farmers vulnerable.”
Dating back to 2012, the partnership was established to eradicate invasive plant species and continue to drive water stewardship in the catchment. “Our efforts have saved an estimated nine billion litres of water per year and counting! The alien vegetation clearing initiative is one of these innovative interventions and is aligned to SAB’s targeted approach towards building sustainable local communities.,” explains Lisa.
Lisa concludes, “SAB is proud of the projects initiated to date that are making a difference by reducing our impact on the environment. Together, we can make a difference and create a sustainable future for all. So, on World Environment Day we join millions of people worldwide to celebrate our planet’s beauty, diversity, and resilience.”
