Heavy rainfall has been affecting most of the States (16 out of 18) of Sudan with 16 out of 18 in a distressed state since the beginning of the rainy season in mid-June.

This has caused the Nile River and its tributaries to overflow, and leading to flood, and flash floods that resulted in casualties and widespread damage.

The United Nations (UN) OCHA reports that the country as of 12 September recorded 118 fatalities with around 120 injured people, and nearly 286 500 people affected.

The significant part of the affected are refugees and internally displaced people with 16 900 destroyed houses, and 43 800 damaged houses across the affected States.

“The worst affected States are Gedaref with nearly 59 000 affected people and Central Darfur more than 41 700,” the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations said in a press release released Tuesday.

“Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is forecast over southern Sudan. Very heavy rainfall is also forecast over eastern Sudan, including Gedaref.”

Other media reports indicate water levels at the Atbara and Ed Deim water stations have exceeded flooding levels.

At least 5 100 hectares of farmland have been affected by the floods while over 2 150 heads of livestock were lost, affecting people’s livelihoods.

Sudan’s farmers are mainly nomadic cattle herders.
