Biogénesis Bagó, an Argentine biotechnology company specialised in animal health and the production of high-potency foot-and-mouth disease vaccines, reaffirms its long-term commitment to supporting South Africa’s national response to the current animal health emergency.
This commitment is grounded in the company’s extensive experience managing foot-and-mouth disease emergencies in multiple regions and is built on three key pillars for outbreak containment: sustained vaccine supply, scientific cooperation, and the generation of field-based evidence, always in alignment with the official requirements of the national programme.
South Africa’s epidemiological context — characterised by viral diversity, the simultaneous circulation of SAT lineages and the presence of wildlife reservoirs — requires solutions that combine scientific rigour, operational scale and long-term commitment. Biogénesis Bagó’s approach is designed to respond to this complexity with reliable vaccines, structured monitoring, and consistent technical support.
Sustained vaccine supply
With an annual production capacity of 350 million doses and established emergency response practices, Biogénesis Bagó confirms its ability to ensure continuity of supply beyond the initial emergency phases, a critical factor for effective foot-and-mouth disease control.
South Africa has already begun using Bioaftogen® as part of its vaccination campaign, following the shipment of the first one million doses at the end of February. Additional deliveries are scheduled in line with the programme’s needs and regulatory processes, supported by the company’s industrial capacity and global logistics system.
Scientific cooperation
Biogénesis Bagó promotes a collaboration model that strengthens confidence through the combination of documented vaccine potency and immunogenicity, robust manufacturing controls, and structured post-vaccination monitoring and field follow-up under official supervision.
Commitment to field-based evidence
As part of its commitment, the company is prepared to support post-vaccination monitoring and field follow-up in coordination with the relevant authorities, jointly defining indicators, sampling strategies, and reporting mechanisms. This approach is aimed at guiding decisions with real-world data, under clear data governance and responsible communication principles.
Biogénesis Bagó’s commitment to South Africa is based on cooperation, adaptation to local regulations, and a shared objective: effective control of foot-and-mouth disease and the progressive recovery of the country’s animal health status.
