Egypt’s agricultural exports have reached five million tons year to date through October 27. This is an increase of 600,000 tons year-on-year.
Agriculture and Land Reclamation minister Muhammad Marzouq Al-Qusayr put out a statement last week that total citrus exports reached 1.87 million tons, leading the list of top exports from Egypt. Potatoes ranked second at 621,000 tons.
Onions came in at 239,700, followed by grapes (143,300 tons), sweet potatoes (80,440), pomegranate (62,400), mango (29,700), beans (21,900), strawberry (19,340), garlic (18,400), guava (11,500), watermelon (8,500), and bell pepper (7,001).
Agriculture in Egypt
Agriculture is a major component of the Egyptian economy, contributing 11.3% of the country’s gross domestic product. The agricultural sector accounts for 28% of all jobs, and over 55% of employment in Upper Egypt is agriculture-related. Egypt’s agriculture sector is dominated by small farms using traditional practices that do not meet international standards.
Through training, farmers are able to achieve international quality standards certification, which helps them gain exporters’ confidence in their products. Implementation of digital technology also helps farmers access information to better manage crops and livestock and thus help them make better agricultural decisions. Digital technology also helps to enhance food security by reducing production costs and waste. It also increases crop productivity with the availability of accurate data to calculate production activities like estimating the daily needs of irrigation and fertilization.
